Graduate Program Options in the Sociology of AgingThe sociology of aging term is a program designed to help students and instructors with the study of health, society, and the aging process. It is designed to serve as a graduate degree in social sciences. Graduate courses in the sociology of aging can be considered the branch of education that would require the most growth from students who are interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree.These courses are divided into two categories; academic term and professional term. Under the first category are the term papers for graduate level courses and seminars for undergraduate programs. Undergraduate student term papers include research papers, first years, first year student paper, thesis or dissertation. The senior undergraduate paper is also included in this category. Undergraduate and graduate course research papers are usually planned in groups and classes that will advance the thesis or dissertation.Undergraduate seminar topics are us ually planned at the beginning of the term so as to give faculty members a general idea of the student body's interests. However, some teachers may choose to include seminar topics on their own initiative. The graduate seminar topics will generally depend on the recommendations of professors and can vary with the research projects that students are planning to undertake at the end of the term. The topics may include biography, evolutionary biology, genomics, and population genetics. Other topics include medical ethics, political economy, cultural anthropology, international development, and global health.While the program is designed for students, there are also classes that require attendance at the university. These classes are organized by departments and college programs, and offer detailed information on research, publication, teaching, and community involvement. Teachers will offer suggestions on teaching methods that will suit their own teaching style. For example, they can s uggest that the teacher use a particular teaching approach when teaching a specific class or topic.Class schedules vary and may be organized by the student or the professor. Most graduate students in the sociology of aging will find the university classes to be the easiest to schedule. They may decide to take a variety of classes depending on their ability to get to them in a timely manner. In order to prepare for the university courses, some students may attend a seminar at the university or participate in a graduate study program sponsored by a specific department.The graduate school structure is the same as in the undergraduate program. There are typically five or six semesters in the graduate program, with the end of each semester marked by the deadline for graduate term paper topics.
